Movies are films that typically last one or two hours. It would seem that there should be nothing noteworthy to know about films, other than the actors, actresses, producer/director, and other crew members. However films are a lot more complicated than just storytelling on screen. Here are some interesting facts about films. Movies have been around for over one hundred years thanks to Thomas Edison's invention of the kinetoscope in 1894. Filmmaking has historically been regarded as a form of art especially since the movies must follow strict guidelines set by the Motion Picture Association of America's film rating system which assigns ratings based on sexual content, violence, language use and other factors including drug use levels. A film's rating system is based on violence, hate speech, sexuality or nudity. For example, films rated G are acceptable for all audiences while films rated R are only appropriate for people 17 years of age and older. A film can be broken down into two basic parts: visual and technical. The visual department is responsible for the lighting, costumes, sets and makeup of the characters in film while the technical department focuses on the actual movie making aspect of it all including camera angles and types of shots used by the director. Not all films are done in English with some being in other languages such as Japanese or Hindi. Languages are also used to get to different nations and cultures. Films can be either independent or part of a series. Independent films are works in which the filmmaker has the freedom to create their own film in which they can use any type of camera or technology they wish, while series films are based around a long-running idea or television show in which the characters, story lines and even sets are all identical. Most of our current movie series were based on TV shows such movie franchisees following their TV 'show' that started when it was popular or usually when they could find an abandoned pilot that was well acted and had great visuals. While the number of films produced in a year around the world has been steady for many years, the number of screens which show them has been gradually increasing since 2010. In 2012, there were 141 million admissions to cinemas a 7% increase compared with 2011, and 953 million tickets sold. A film crew is a group of people hired by a production company or independent filmmaker to work together in the process of filmmaking. These individuals typically have different areas of responsibility and work closely together on well prepared scripts while filming movies. Some well known crew members include directors, screenwriters, producers, cinematographers, sound editors and special effects specialists. The director is the head of the film crew and has the most responsibility. The director is responsible for planning out all aspects of a film's production including scheduling, casting and shooting. The Director of Photography (DP) is in charge of all functions related to filming such as camera setup and movement, control over lighting and choosing lenses, and he or she also takes charge of the crew. The DP reports directly to the director. Screenwriters write scripts for films based on their perspective of what a film should be like, which is usually different from what actually gets filmed due to financial reasons or actor input. cfa1e77820
